Anonymous GM Rips Detroit Lions

Detroit finished with a 10-6 record and made the playoffs last year, so even where they stand after four games, you figure the Eagles will have their hands full on Sunday. But according to one anonymous general manager interviewed by Pro Football Weekly, the Lions really are not very good.

The article has been making the rounds in Detroit since it was published on Monday, but the Lions continue to stew publicly over the unflattering things that were said. A sampling:

  • • “The one thing that is clear – they are not as close as people have tried to make it seem,” the GM told PFW. “They are a one-dimensional offensive team that if the quarterback (Matthew Stafford) is not on, people are figuring it out. If you take (WR Calvin) Johnson out of the game (one TD through four games, compared to eight TDs at the same stage last season), who else do they have that can beat you?
  • • “[Ndamukong] Suh belongs on the All-Hype team.

“I have listened to the media hype about Suh since he got in the league — what has he done? Even the year he had all those garbage sacks, the guy took a million plays off and got pushed around in the run game. I have never thought he was a very good pro player. I liked him coming out and thought he had a chance. But I also never thought he was going to be the second coming that he was labeled. I am not sure who bestowed that on him, but it is kind of a joke.”

  • • “They don’t have enough good players, and the players they think are good are not that good,” the GM said.

The Lions certainly have issues, which we discussed with Justin Rogers of MLive.com this week. I tend to agree the offense is basically Calvin Johnson and company, and their defense has issues in the secondary. Still, I'm not so sure they are entirely lost, as the GM suggests.

“They are not a team that I think is ready. If I am going there to take over the job, I am not thinking that is a quick fix.”

Meanwhile, Lions players are fuming. Center Domonic Raiola already commented yesterday, but with the harshest criticism being aimed at the defensive line and Suh especially, the second overall pick in 2010 became the latest to speak out on Wednesday.

"True men do that (go on record)," Suh said. "I don't know who he is. I couldn't tell you if he's one."

So while the Eagles may not be hosting a good team on Sunday, at least it's safe to say they will be lining up across from an angry opponent.
