Debate: Who’s On Your Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and Sixers Mount Rushmore?

Jun 4, 2013, 3:17 PM EDT

The guys over at ProFootballTalk have been running a vote to determine who belongs on the Mount Rushmore of individual NFL franchises.

The PFT staff nominated guys for each team that they allowed their readers to vote on. The four most popular names get their faces carved in virtual rock.

They released their results for the Cowboys and Redskins last night and will do the same for the Eagles and Giants this evening.

Here’s the list of guys up for Mount Eagle:

Chuck Bednarik, Tom Brookshier, Jerome Brown, Harold Carmichael, Randall Cunningham, Brian Dawkins, Donovan McNabb, Andy Reid, Norm Van Brocklin, Steve Van Buren, Brian Westbrook and Reggie White.

You can get your last-second votes in for your favorite four by visiting PFT. The results will be revealed on the ProFootballTalk show on NBCSN tonight at 5.

To hype the vote, PFT Grand Poobah Mike Florio appeared on’s Lunch Break today to explain the vote and rile you up about Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb:

CSN and Lunch Break will actually be running their own Mount Rushmore series for the remainder of the week with Roob Frank and the Phillies on Wednesday, Dei Lynam and the Sixers on Thursday and Panotch and the Flyers on Friday.

Pick a team: Who’s carved into the side of your mountain?

Gimme Wilt, Doc, Billy and Allen, and Bernie, Clarkie, Hexy and … the Big E*? That’s a good debate.

The Phanatic, Charlie Manual, Roy Holiday, and Domonate Brown.
Reggie White, Randall Cunningham, Merl Reese, and Micheal Vick

  10. ochospantalones - Jun 4, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Eagles: Steve Van Buren, Chuck Bednarik, Reggie White, Brian Dawkins

Sixers: Wilt, Dr. J, Billy Cunningham, A.I.

    Phillies: Ashburn, Carlton, Schmidt, Utley

For the Eagles, getting down to four is difficult. McNabb, Reid, Westbrook, Cunningham and other recent folks are nowhere close, but if you go back to the earlier days there are a bunch of strong candidates (Bert Bell, Pete Pihos, Greasy Neale, Tommy McDonald, Norm Van Brocklin). Two modern wild cards would be Jerome Brown and Merrill Reese, but I’ll stick with the four above.

For the Sixers, getting up to four is difficult. Wilt and Dr. J are locks. Billy Cunningham makes it for his success as a player and a coach. Moses was great, but here too briefly. It’s between A.I. and Charles Barkley for the final spot. Chuck was probably the better player, but spent less time here, I’ll go with A.I.

For the Phillies, Schmidt and Carlton are locks. It gets a little tricky after that, but I don’t think you can pass up Whitey Ashburn. The concourse at the stadium is named after him for a reason. Beyond that is a bit of a free for all. I loved Harry Kalas, but with Ashburn already on the list it is hard to go for a second broadcaster. Robin Roberts is probably the best player not already on the list, but the ’07-’11 teams need representation. You could go any direction between Utley, Howard, and Rollins (and Hamels needs some consideration). I think Utley was the best player on those teams, so I’ll go with him. If you want to get wacky, there is always the Phanatic.

  12. Chapps - Jun 4, 2013 at 6:25 PM

    Phillies: McGraw, Carlton, Kalas, Ashburn

    Sixers: Doc, Moses, Iverson, Wilt

    Eagles: Bednarik, McNabb, Reggie, Cunningham

    Flyers: Hextall, Lindbergh, Barber, Propp

You can’t carve Lindros into a rock, he’d get a concussion from all the hammering. Plus he sucks.

  14. DSD - Jun 5, 2013 at 5:45 AM

Before I list my players, allow me to preface it by stating that I’m only going to consider players who played the majority of their careers after 1945 and who spent at least 5 years playing for one of the Philly teams. Therefore, notable players like Grover Cleveland Alexander, Chuck Klein, Norm Van Brocklin, Terrell Owens, Pelle Lindbergh and Moses Malone are not listed. Also, the player must be an athlete. Announcers and coaches were not considered. We can make their own Mount Rushmore later. Now here’s my selections…
Phillies- Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, Richie Ashburn
Eagles- Chuck Bednarik, Steve Van Buren, Reggie White, Brian Dawkins
Flyers- Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Bill Barber, Mark Howe
Sixers- Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley

    The Phanatic.
