DeSean Jackson would like a new contract but what he’s chasing can’t be bought

Jan 6, 2014, 12:23 PM EDT

DeSean Jackson spoke to the media today down at the NovaCare Complex and said a lot of things. The crux of it is that the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver would like a new contract after the career year he put up with the help of Nick Foles and Chip Kelly this season. He thinks he deserves it.

CSNPhilly.com’s Reuben Frank has all of the quotes and specifics of Jackson’s current deal. He seems pretty fairly paid if you’re looking for my opinion.

“But I definitely feel like it’s deserving. I’m proven in this league, and after this past year, went out there, no distractions, and just really put it all in for my team and went out there and had a lot of success, so we’ll see how it goes.”

In a rather humorous twist, DJacc also posted this photo about two hours ago:

I think it’s safe to say we’re all going to miss the Eagles playing every weekend for the next couple of months. It’s so much more fun watching a satisfied DeSean do his thing on the field than talk about money off of it.

But the kids these days are hungry and they want to eat up.

Let’s just hope he never reaches truly “disgruntled” levels. Nothing wrong with wanting a little more as long as you go about it the right way.

This is a fookin joke. He out did his contract are you kidding me. Great players make great plays during crunch time. He was a NO SHOW and couldn’t get open against a below average corner. Then when the below average corner got hurt his replacement was horrible and the punk ass fraud couldn’t get open again. Now because he had a okay year he wants more lettuce again after signing and getting 10 million upfront less then 2 years ago. If it were me I cut ties quietly and move him for a top 10 draft pick if anyone wants aloud mouth player who quit on his team and city 3 years ago. Wow out performed his contract hey asshole knock knock thats your job hard working people go to work everyday and out perform their contracts and some go with out a raise for years what a spoiled dick get rid of him he is nothing but cancer. What he should have said was I have to do a better job getting off press coverage. I will hit the weight room and try and get stronger no this ass hole wants money wow

What’s he gonna do? Sit out next season? Zero chance of that happening. Eagles should ignore it completely.

Trade this clown! He’s the only thing holding us back from being a great team. The dude needs to go.

Guys, we’ve isolated the Eagles’ “only” thing that’s keeping them from being a great team. It’s their 1,300 yard receiver that had 25 catches of 20+ yards this year. Fix that one, solitary problem and drive the Lombardi down Broad Street.

The thing that gets me the game was just over, they LOST, instead of talking about the team and how he is going to work to get better upper body strenth, the first thing out of his mouth is MONEY. That just shows me that is all he was thinking about during this season and the last game. He is a very good receiver bu not a team guy, this is the worst thing that could have come out of his month right after a lost in a playoff game. You got to be kidding me. So every 2 years when he has a good year or two lets just tear up his contract and give him a new on, plus another BIG signing bouns. I am sick of players like him. There is nothing wrong with trying to make all the money you can, but this guy is just an inmuture punk, that is only worried about himself.

He’s not worth it. I’ve always said Maclin is the best receiver on this team. If he was healthy Deseans numbers would be down because Maclin would’ve had a monster year. He’s a punk and that’s it. Not a true football player and he’s mostly absent in crunch time. To quote Chip “big people beat up on the little people”. And anyone with that horrible blood sucker of an agent they should stay away from. Did they not learn from the TO situation?

I wasn’t happy when they resigned him honestly. He has a bad attitude and he’s very undersized. He’s a decent second receiver that’s all. He has a decent year, ninth best receiving yards, and he wants more money. They have lots of other talent to pay and he wants to suck up more money for himself. Trade him now and get fresh draft picks. A nice big fast wide out that can beat man and double coverages that buys a team first mentality. He’s replaceable and upgradable in my opinion.

    9th in total yards
4th in YPC (among guys with 1000+ yards)
    2nd in 20+ and 40+ yd catches
    “Decent second receiver that’s all”

Like Iverson, imagine Jackson supporting (or being supported by) another elite player across the formation. Number 1 receiver skills complimented by a true number one with the full package.. like AJ Green, Marshall, Bryant, Johnson, and so on. Not like those guys are just layin’ around waiting to be snagged, but a bigstrongfastawesome guy like that might just be in this years draft. Mix in a similar guy like that with those big hamburger helper alshon jeffery hands, who do you cover and how? Then there’s the Shady dilemma.. opposing defenses purchase large white flags in off season.

        I don’t know that Maclin’s not that guy…

(Was that kind of your point?)

      • willh888 - Jan 6, 2014 at 4:45 PM

it is, in addition to guy x

    • John Z - Jan 6, 2014 at 4:41 PM

I’m not one who puts too much meaning in stats like yards per catch. He has a good YPC because his so one dimensional with the big play and needs to play in space. Most important stats are receptions, TD’s and yards. He’s a “good” receiver that’s it. Once he loses even half a step of speed he’ll be useless.

This is clearly spurred on by his agent. He just signed with DeSean in July, and needs to negotiate a new contract to get a commission.

I supported him when he wanted a deal the last time. But this time, I disagree. Year after year, Desean disappears down the stretch of the season. He sucks in cold weather. He doesn’t get open and he’s not a guy like Cooper who can leap over people to catch the ball. By no means is he an elite receiver and doesn’t deserve elite money. Is he important to our team success? Yes, but that doesn’t mean we should bend over backwards to keep him on the team. It’s hard to preach a team mentality when you have guys like Desean asking for more money after a career year in an offense catered to his style of play.

I’d like to see Desean stay with the team, but his me-first antics are getting very old and TO-ey. You can often see in his interviews that it pains him to tow the team-first line.

    1. Catch balls
    2. Shut up

Who among us doesn’t think we deserve a raise? He just signed a new deal. Not to stick with it this quickly stinks of selfish opportunism (see O, T). Did the Eagles insist on taking money back from him when he underperformed? No, that’s not how contracts work.

      • Jason R. - Jan 6, 2014 at 7:28 PM

He didn’t “just sign” a new deal, he signed it 22 months ago. As someone who’s gotten two performance based raises since then, I’m not gonna call the kettle black.

Trade this guy for a top 10 pick before he gets REALLY disgruntled.

Or ignore him, because he realistically has two options: shut up and play, or whine your ass off and play.

i don’t know what’s more comical, that you think he’s worth a top 10 pick or that you want a player currently on the roster who you believe to be worth a top 10 pick to be sent packing.

First of all the reason he’s trying to change his contract is that only $250,000 of it is guaranteed money. If we restructure his contract so he gets more up front we can give ourselves more cap room. His cap hit is around 12.5 million for 2014. My problem is that he’s a veteran player and should know better than to answer money questions in the media. He is a game changing receiver and he is one of the best in the league especially because of his return abilities. Also he singed his new contract two years ago and anyone that looked at the contract knew this was coming with only two years guaranteed, especially knowing that he played very well this season.

Desean Jackson is a GREEDY SOB and will never be satisfied! I hope they trade his ungrateful butt, he’ll never be Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald. Look at all of the team records Lesean McCoy broke this year and he led the league in rushing and you don’t see him asking for a new contract! Players like this make it easy for fans not want to go to playoff games so they almost get blacked out! Sooner or later the average fan is going to be priced out and it’s because of greedy players like this!

I’ve never understood Eagles’ fans love for this guy. I’m not trying to attack him or you guys but I watched the Eagles every week this season and stats aside, Cooper appeared to be the #1 receiver. We know Cooper isn’t a #1. So what does that say about Desean? The people that put him among the best in the league are nuts. You replaced Andy, Donovan, and finally Vick. Get rid of this guy and move on to a brighter future..
