Even As Reid Heads for Exit, Eagles GM Roseman Likely Sticking Around

Probably not the news you wanted to hear less than 24 hours after the Eagles were embarrassed on a national stage, their season heading into the toilet. In fact, it's probably the exact opposite. The Inquirer's Jeff McLane filed a report on Tuesday morning that indicates we might be stuck with general manager Howie Roseman for awhile.

According to McLane, Roseman signed either a four- or five-year extension as part of the organization's succession plan when Joe Banner stepped down in June. The implication there is with so many years remaining on his contract, Roseman likely has some measure of job security for the time being.

It's important to note that the extension doesn't preclude Roseman from being fired, but obviously if they did that, the Eagles would be paying him for years to come regardless. Also, the extension was signed back in June, a period when there were still some good vibes surrounding the club's offseason.

While Andy Reid has final say on all personnel matters, one of Roseman's primary responsibilities as the GM involves coordinating the draft. Since he took over in 2010, the Eagles have already cut some fourth-, third-, and even second-round picks, and are still waiting on multiple first rounders to live up to their billing.

In addition to some shaky-looking drafts, Roseman has been getting fleeced in trades recently, too. The Eagles could do no better than a seventh-round pick for Asante Samuel this offseason after he made the Pro Bowl as recently as 2010, and shipping Winston Justice to Indianapolis was only worth a swap of sevenths.

It may be a tad premature to say Roseman deserves to be fired though. The Eagles have clearly made some huge swings and misses in their recent drafts, but the jury is still out on several young players on the roster who either haven't received much of a shot, or perhaps could improve under fresh tutelage.

Either way, with his extension in place, and a limited track record, Roseman will likely be back for another year, if not longer. With Banner out of the picture, Roseman also takes care of all contract negotiations now, which is an aspect of management where the Eagles are always very competitive. It's also possible whoever the new head coach is -- assuming there is one -- could also assume control of personnel decisions.

However, anybody can understand why more and more people are ready for a completely fresh start, from coaches all the way up to the front office. Please, just don't hold your breath is all.
