Jason Avant Makes a Good Point Regarding Replacement Refs and Player Safety

Share

As we discussed earlier in the day, the replacement refs in last night's Cowboys-Giants game did a solid job. They made a few generally questionable calls but nothing you wouldn't see from a regular set of refs. But there were also rumblings that the NFL picked the best of the replacements to work last nights game to try and get a little bit of leverage by showing the replacements can be adequate.

Eagles wide receiver spoke about his fears regarding replacement refs prior to Wednesday night's NFL opener and his thought process makes sense. If the NFL is all about safety and protecting its players, how in the world can they roll out scrub refs?

CSN's John Gonzalez has more:

“I will say this, this league, our commissioner, is all about player
safety,” Avant said. “And, with the deal not being done, there’s a
definite compromise, kind of an oxymoron, so to speak, with the refs not
being there. A lot of guys are kind of concerned about it. That’s a big
deal for us, as far as player safety. Around the locker room, everyone
talks about it. All the players know about it. There are some things
that are going to get called, some things that are not going to be
called. When you go into a game, you know what things you can do to get
away with with these refs that we have. Guys are going to kind of cheat
this week.”
