Meet the Eagles Entire Coaching Staff

Share

The Eagles confirmed the completion of Chip Kelly’s coaching
staff on Friday, which I think I can say with some certainty will help the beat
writers sleep better at night. PhiladelphiaEagles.com has nice little introductions
to all 22 hires, but in case you just want the cliff notes, we’ve highlighted a
few observations of our own.

Defensive Assistants

Jerry Azzinaro is not only the defensive line coach, he’s
also Kelly’s assistant head coach, joining him from Oregon’s staff. That should
further help explain why he was hired before the defensive coordinator.

Potentially poking some holes in the idea Bill Davis will
utilize a 4-3 under scheme is the fact that there are two separate coaches on
the staff for inside and outside linebackers – Rick Minter and Bill McGovern
respectively. That doesn’t confirm anything one way or the other, but one might
think the distinction would only be necessary in a 3-4.

The last major addition came on Friday when John Lovett
joined the staff to coach defensive backs. Lovett has been coaching primarily
defense and defensive backs at the NCAA level since 1985.

Offensive Assistants

The holdovers from Andy Reid’s staff are Ted Williams
and Duce Staley. Williams enters his 19th season with Philadelphia, the last 16
of those as the club’s running backs coach. He’ll slide back to tight ends coach,
while Staley will now draw on his expertise in coaching running backs.

Bill Lazor becomes the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach. He also
coached quarterbacks in the NFL for the Seahawks and Redskins. No word on what
he runs in the 40-yard dash.

John Stoutland of the University of Alabama signed on to
become the offensive line coach, which I think of all the assistants from the
college ranks he will be the biggest crowd pleaser. Alabama basically runs a
professional minor-league football team at this point, so he’s got plenty of
experience working with superior athletes.

All the buzz on Twitter is about the Sports Science
Coordinator on Kelly’s staff. Nobody seems to know exactly what that is, but
before landing this gig, Shaun Huls served as the head strength and
conditioning coach and combatives coordinator for Navy Special Warfare.

Coordinators

We’ve already discussed the unpopular decisions for
offensive and defensive coordinator, but said nothing of Dave Fipp, who will
coordinate the Eagles’ special teams. Fipp, 38, joins the team after a two-year
stint as assistant special teams coach for the Miami Dolphins, who according to
some data had the second- and fourth-best unit the past two seasons.
