Mike Vick Named Eagles Starting QB for 2013 Season

Aug 20, 2013, 12:13 PM EDT

Mike Vick performed better in the first two preseason games and that was enough for Chip Kelly to name him the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles this season. Kelly made the announcement this morning saying that Vick is his guy for the Birds season-opener against the Redskins down in Washington, DC. And he’s Kelly’s guy for the long haul.

“We wanted to put a guy in place, if we could, in enough time to get us prepared for the season,” he said. “We didn’t want to let this linger, but I think it also expressed itself on the field.”

“The one thing we all learned from this group is that I think we’ve got two guys, and maybe even three guys that can play in this league. It was a healthy competition … I think they both made each other better,” Kelly said. “I was really happy with how those guys handled the situation, ‘cuz it can at times get testy, it can at times — it’s one guy competing against another, but I thought it was a healthy competition.”

More from Kelly and co. here.

I think this was the right call. Foles didn’t look bad really but I think Vick gives us more big play potential. Maybe they can move Foles to safety. He can’t be any worse than what we have now…………….

I agree with the call, Vick did look better. He just looks much more comfortable overall this year then he did in years past. With Chip being a run first guy will only help his production, and everyone else around him.

Vick won’t be the next Eagles QB to win a playoff game, but Chip said it would be a fair competition and he’s a man of his word (even if we all had a feeling how this competition was going to play out).

Chip has a stable of young QBs, a full rebuilding project in front of him, and a 33 year old QB. Foles will get his turn, probably much sooner than we’d like given Vick’s tendency to get blown up. If he can’t get it done, Barkley will get his.

We’ll see how long Vick keeps his starting job. What happens if he stinks the joint out on Saturday? Or, more likely, gets injured?

The thing everyone is missing is the head coach is Chip Kelly!!! He’s not a hard-headed, one dimensional, throw seventy passes a game and get your QB killed kind of coach! This team is gonna RUN THE BALL. Vick just might make it all year this year. The line is looking good, Shady and Brown are looking good, and Vick himself is looking good. He’s not gonna be asked to “carry the load” like before. Defenses are gonna have a helluva time figuring anything out this year.
I just hope the D comes to play week in and week out…

Not if he doesn’t learn to slide when he runs the ball. Going down headfirst is a recipe for disaster. But, if the QB gets rid of the ball as quickly as CK hopes, only an untouched blitzer should have a chance at a sack.
