Phil Simms names Eagles offense one of NFL’s five worst units

Oct 25, 2013, 11:45 AM EDT

Phil Simms

In terms of quality, there isn’t much separation between the offenses for the Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger—that’s the NFL according to Phil Simms.

The former New York Giants quarterback and CBS analyst was listing the top and bottom five units in the league on Showtime’s Inside the NFL this week, and coming in at No. 60 is Philadelphia’s offense. Never mind the Eagles are third in yards per game (425.3), tied for 13th in points per game (24.1). As offenses go, only the Jags and the Arizona Cardinals are worse says Simms.

To be fair, the Eagles managed to scrape together just three points against the Cowboys in Week 7, and we’ve seen the offense struggle to find the end zone before against Kansas City and Denver. Maybe Simms is on to something?

Nah.’s Jordan Raanan transcribed the segment, and Simms is full of it to say the least.

“I put the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense as one of my bottom five. Why did I do it? Not that they are one of the worst five units in the NFL. It’s because, ‘It’s going to be one of the fastest units we’ve ever seen. What are you going to do to stop? The NFL is … it’s going to be unbelievable.’

How is that working out? Is it just the most unbelievable thing you’ve ever seen?”

That was Simms’ full explanation on ‘Inside the NFL.’ The panel then skipped to the next topic.

Anybody able to make sense of that? No? Me either.

Look, the Eagles’ offense has maybe got more attention than it deserves due in large part to Chip Kelly, but either they’re one of the worst five units in the NFL or they’re not. And they’re not—you mean to tell me Simms would rather play in the Rams offense? The Vikings? The Jets? The Buccaneers? Please.

That’s not even looking at defenses. What a dumb thing to say.

Raanan has more on Simms’ rantings, including some reactions from Eagles players.

Remember, this is the NUMBER ONE football analyst CBS can find. Troy Aikman’s brain will be liquid in ten years and he’ll still be infinitely better than this asshole. Fuck New York.

The major networks ALWAYS use Quarterbacks who have won the Super Bowl as color analysts. Of course, Eagles fans wouldn’t be expected to know that. NYG 24 EAGBAGS 16 on Sunday. How’s that ultra-fast Chip Kelly Offense workin’ out for ya? Faster than Don Tollefson trying to rob a charity to support his drug habit, I heard! PHUCK PHILLY! You are all Giants wannabes…

“The major networks ALWAYS use Quarterbacks who have won the Super Bowl as color analysts”

        Except for

        Steve Beuerline
        Dan Fouts
        Dan Marino
        Rich Gannon
        Boomer Esiason

        Stay not smart, G-man

You’re right, I’ve always wanted my team to play in a swampland

Hahah are you kidding me dude…..with a healthy squad (as almost seen in week one against the skins) the birds have an excellent offense and just because Eli Manning has gotten lucky a couple times all of NY hated him his first few seasons and I personally would never want him on my team the Giants are pathetic this year in a horrible division they will finish dead last and the laughing stock of the NFL Eli will have a record breaking season with the most turnovers ever in a season and the team will fall apart….a healthy offense even with Vick who is at the end of his career has the potential to be on of the top 5 offenses in the NFL and I’m talking about having a healthy Maclin. Please try to tell me the Giants have a better offense because ugh YOU CAN’T…..and the birds almost beat your pathetic crew in blue with a rookie QB who has had barely had any reps with the first team all year

So buddy, how is all that shit talking going for you now?

      • Connor - Dec 9, 2013 at 2:26 PM

Hey guy, how you like them apples? 8-5 baby. G-men sitting pretty with 5 wins though. Still one more win than the Bills, Browns and Jaguars I guess…so you’ve got that going for you

  2. willh888 - Oct 25, 2013 at 1:34 PM

Nah I’d rather have el-int manning behind center with his 15 interceptions, 1 win and 66 rating. Add zero running backs to that offense you have yourself the aahm, 2013 NYGiants. And hey, how bout them Tampa Bay Bucs. Averaging 14 points per game to go with that super fun 297 yards of TOTAL offense, ooo man. Give me that Glennon dude and no Doug Martin. Watch out NFC South, they’ll win a game eventually.

Just slap the ginas on sunday and put this character in his place.

Most of the time, our offense is a mess. They do have moments of brilliance with the big play, but outside of McCoy, I couldn’t care less if they stayed or went. Hell, a case could be made that they’re probably the worst offensive unit in NFC East. Are they bottom five dweller, no they’re not.

    • willh888 - Oct 25, 2013 at 1:48 PM

      make the case then.

Are you kidden me man? Did you see the Eagles on Monday night against the skins with a healthly squad besides Maclin…..the offense hasn’t moved that quick since but that offense was unstoppable and if Foles can be halfway decent while Vick is getting healthy the Birds will win the NFC east for sure

I recall a Sims broadcast a few years ago when he said one team was learning that the other wasn’t “a one-horse pony show.” That’s three cliches jammed into one statement that makes no sense. Listening to Phil just might make you dumber.

Phil Simms would make a great politician! Sounds just like most of them already.

  5. jay peezo - Oct 25, 2013 at 2:24 PM

I’m gonna drink a brick of beers at the tailgate on Sunday.

  7. Jayking - Oct 26, 2013 at 3:57 PM

What a dumb retard Jacksonville is 32nd statistical ranked and the eagles are 6th Numbers never lie

    • LolCryEaglesCry - Oct 27, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Unless Jags put up more points on the Niners D than eagles put up on the Giants

  8. LolCryEaglesCry - Oct 27, 2013 at 10:44 PM

Put up 0 points on offense congrats salty philthy fans

    • This guy sucks green - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:45 PM

And still almost beat the Giants….imagine if shady got the ball on the 2 yard line instead of having our 3rd string right handed QB roll to his left on a play he has only seen on tape…would have been a different game

  9. Mark - Oct 28, 2013 at 1:32 PM

Simms and Collinsworth have had a back and forth about this offense since Week 1. Simms has done nothing but mock the read-option since before the season and his statement was meant as a big FU to all the people that were building it up.

He seems to really take it personally for some reason, and actually ranks them in the bottom 5 JUST BECAUSE of the hype, not that the stats are in the bottom 5.

    Basically, he is a troll.

  10. dave - Nov 9, 2013 at 3:14 AM

didn’t the giants get shut out by the falcons a few years back in the play offs to a horrible d, the only points they scored was a safety

  11. Dave - Nov 19, 2013 at 9:55 PM

    Simms is a fuckin joke
