Devin Hester's absence big break for Eagles' special teams

The Eagles' injury report this week has included just two players, tight end Zach Ertz (groin) and outside linebacker Marcus Smith (hamstring), both of whom are expected to be game-time decisions for the Monday night season opener (see Injury Update).

But the biggest piece of injury news in this game might concern their opponent, which will be missing the best return man of all-time.

Falcons WR/KR Devin Hester is dealing with turf toe in his right foot and is ruled out for Monday Night Football. Hester did not suit up for practice all week, according to ESPN Falcons beat reporter Vaughn McClure, and told reporters Friday the injury had "gotten a little worse."

Hester is more inclined to miss one or two weeks than to risk aggravating the injury and missing more time.

That's good news for the Eagles because Week 1 is the only week they'll care about the Falcons. Hester has 19 career return touchdowns, 14 on punts, five on kickoffs. That's the most in NFL history.

Pretty big difference between Hester and any of his backups. WR Nick Williams has returned just nine kicks and one punt in five NFL games. The other candidates are WR Eric Weems, CB Robert Alford and rookie RB Terron Ward.
