The Flyers desperately need a new goal song

Oct 31, 2013, 2:30 PM EDT

Vincent Lecavalier

If there’s any silver lining whatsoever to a Flyers’ offense that has yet to score more than two goals in team’s first first seven home games, it’s the fact that we fans haven’t had to listen to the team’s crummy new goal song all that often.

Wait… the Flyers’ goal song isn’t “Doop” anymore?

I can’t blame you if you haven’t been paying attention recently, but “Doop” has been retired as the team’s goal song. The Flyers have a new goal song and it’s pretty awful.

It’s “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark,” better known as “Light ‘Em Up” by Fall Out Boy.

Ugh.

Show of hands if any of you actually like this song or Fall Out Boy.

*Crickets. *

That’s what I thought.

“Doop” had been the Orange and Black’s goal-celebration theme since the start of the 2011 playoffs, reportedly at the request of the recently bought-out Danny Briere. With Briere now in Montreal, the song has been shelved.

Personally, I felt “Doop” was a decent goal song but I get the fact that some didn’t like it because they felt the Flyers took it from their Philly soccer neighbors, the Union, which has been using to song to celebrate goals scored since the its inception.  To me, it just felt like a unique Philly thing, which made it cool.

Before “Doop,” the Flyers used Pennywise’s “Bro Hymn” as the team’s goal song. Many of you will remember it from the Flyers’ run to the 2010 Stanley Cup Final. Another decent choice but it was a tad bit watered-down considering the Anaheim Ducks have used it since 2005 and the New York Islanders used it during the 2009-10 season.

In the pre-lockout days, the Flyers used Blur’s “Song 2” to celebrate goals. Some of you may know that song better as the “Woo Hoo” song. I wouldn’t mind bringing that goal song back except for one glaring black mark: the Penguins have used it in the past. They’ve tainted it. If there’s one thing in life you don’t want to be like, it’s something that reminds people of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

For the first two home games of this season, AC/DC’s “TNT” blared throughout Wells Fargo Center on the rare occasion the Flyers actually scored. That celebratory theme was pretty bad but not as dreadful as “Light ‘Em Up,” which replaced it.

With these terrible goal songs, it’s no wonder there’s been so much bad karma around the Flyers’ offense this season.

Anyway, what’s abundantly clear here is that the Flyers desperately need a new goal song.

There’s an online petition floating around that requests the Flyers change their goal song to Tag Team’s “Whoomp There It Is.” Really solid choice. I back it.  I signed the petition. You should too. Our pal Zoo With Roy even threw his support behind it.

Allow me to toss another suggestion out there: the “Space Jam” theme song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8CCQgDbAxw

I get that it’s from a basketball movie, but imagine the disheartened looks on the faces of the opposing goalie and players as they hear that intro, that beat and then lyrics like, “To the jam, all in your face! Wassup, just feel the bass! Drop it, rock, down the room! Shake it, quake it, space KABOOM!”

They would feel so much shame. So much.

Anyone out there have any other suggestions? Let’s hear them.

It’s a little obscure/hipstery, but the flyers should really play “Adrenaline Nightshift” by the Japandroids. Give it a listen. It’s a good one.

Jump Around wouldn’t be a bad way to celebrate.

I know the song has already had its time and place. But I would rather hear the chorus of knock knock over anything we have herd this year to date.

During the Legion of Doom days it was always the HEY HEY HEY refrain at the end of Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin Bout Love.” I could get on board with that.

YES! That was my favorite goal song even after they started using Bro Hymn.

The song called Hey, by the 80′s punk band FEAR (the live version) , or just use The Orange And The Black by The Boils.

Can’t use The Orange and the Black- it’s already used for their post home win song and for both songs to be the same is just boring.

Maybe we can get Dave Mustaine and Rob Zombie to collaborate and make a new one

Agreed, get Rob Zombie involved. He should be able to muster up a sweet guitar lick or something…

They just acquired Steve Downie. We should be more concerned about finding a Penalty Kill fight song.

Go figure. The Limp Wristers club is going to hate the trade but Homer just pulled off a steal.

And the knuckledraggers will tell how this toughness will free up space for the World’s Greatest Player to work his magic. Just like when the Flyers acquired Jay Trashill last season.

Talbot is not a big loss. There are 100 of him in the league. Plus, having Talbot and Scooter on this team is redundant. Give Scooter Talbot’s job and you can keep screaming about “goons.”

Downie was not brought here to fight. He was brought here to bring secondary scoring. He has been playing with two of Colorado’s best players and is putting up numbers. Put him on the first line with Giroux and see what happens.

So Talbot was traded for Steve Downie? Yes!!

    Follow me for a second.

I had a roommate in college that was really into online chess. He would play random music while he played until he felt like he was playing particularly well and focused, then superstitiously play that song on repeat until he felt otherwise. It was actually quite entertaining there for a while (until he was stuck on “My Heart Will Go On” during a specific hot streak that lasted months).

Anyway, why not just shuffle through a bunch of songs that may or may not fit into what we think of as a goal celebration song and see what works? Team goes on a hot streak –> The song stays (and maybe we’re stuck with a little Celine Dion, but at least the hockey gods would have decided instead of somebody in the Marketing department).

Why are we so concerned about a song we are only going to hear once a week anyway?

Let’s get our money’s worth play one of the early Metallica songs like Fade to Black or For the Whom the Bell Tolls. You are only going to hear it once a game. It might as well be 8 minutes long.

The goal song needs to be a song that envolves a croweds consistant cheer, hence why the Blurs song worked, no lyeric between each crowed filled “Woo Hoo” and why Bro Hym was so embraced, and even the Doop song and why TNT was a little better than Light em Up. Anysong that uses a lyric, will be drowned out and clash with the croweds cheer. The song needs to be in rythem with a cheer or chant. Aside from going back to Bro Hym, Whomp there it is, is probably our best choice. Sorry but the “Space Jam” song is an aweful idea.

Keep it simple. Gimme either Whoomp!, Taranchula by Smashing Pumpkins, or Rock and Roll by Led Zep.
