Flyers Alumni to Honor McCrimmon with Black Shoulder Patch

Dec 30, 2011, 1:10 PM EDT

The Flyers alumni will wear black No. 10 patches on their jerseys during Saturday afternoon's Alumni Game in honor of the late Brad McCrimmon.

Amidst all the celebration and general good times that figure to come with the impending Winter Classic festivities is the sad reminder that the Flyers will be without one of the greatest defensemen in their franchise history.

It has been nearly four months since Brad McCrimmon lost his life in a plane crash that resulted in the tragic deaths of every member of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team.

In a typically classy move by the Flyers, McCrimmon, who almost certainly would been asked to join the alumni roster, and who also would have probably declined due to his coaching responsibilities, will still be part of the Saturday’s Alumni Game.

From the Flyers:

Whenever the franchise does anything to honor its former players, I can’t help but be reminded of the line from Keith Jones’ autobiography in which he discusses how Ed Snider and the rest of the Flyers brass handled the remainder of his contract after Jones was forced to retire with more than two years left on his deal.

To quote Snider: “You played hard for me…you’re a Flyer for life.”

And as I’m sure any of the former Flyers taking part in the Alumni game will readily attest—that’s a pretty good deal.
