Flyers-Senators: The Time for Half-Measures and Talk Is Over

Apr 11, 2013, 5:42 PM EDT

The situation is not promising. The Flyers are seven points
back of a playoff spot with nine games to play, a seemingly insurmountable
deficit. That said, there may be a window – perhaps more of a doggy door – into
the playoffs yet, but only if they step up and the seize the opportunity now.

Coincidentally, one of the teams that may hold the keys to
the final vacancy is tonight’s opponent, the Ottawa Senators. All of a sudden they’re
sinking like a stone, losers of five straight, a few of those coming at the
hands of some mediocre competition, including Florida and Tampa Bay in the last
two.

It’s hard to put a finger on precisely what ails the Sens,
but it’s happening at both ends. Ottawa has scored just seven goals during their
ongoing pointless streak, while surrendering an average of 3.2 against.

The Flyers actually play the Senators twice down the
stretch, plus have dates left against four more teams ahead of them in the race for the final few playoff spots, so they can still help themselves quite a bit. It’s all a matter
of getting the job done now though, because any one loss to those opponents at
this stage might be their last.
