Introducing the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Now in Electric Blue!

In advance of their move to Allentown, the Flyers’ minor-league
affiliate unveiled their new name and logo on Wednesday. Get ready for a whole
new look.

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are set to drop the puck on AHL
action in a brand new arena beginning in 2014. While it’s still not the good ol’
Spectrum, or even located in a venue at or near the sports complex, at least
the club will soon be only a short ride up the turnpike rather than a five-hour
trip to Glens Falls, NY up in the Adirondack Mountains.

One aesthetic change does have some folks up in arms
however. When the Phantoms take the ice in their new home, they will be doing
away with the familiar purple in favor of an “electric blue.” We took a sample
directly from the logo, which you can see in the swatch provided on the right.

As Broad Street Hockey points out (and kudos to alerting us
to the name and logo changes in the first place), the combination of blue and
orange is often directly related to New York. They’re on the state flag, and
the Mets, Knicks, and Islanders all utilize the color scheme. The point is
valid, but the familiar black – which those clubs generally do not feature –
should continue to give the Phantoms something of a unique look.

It seems like a minor detail when you consider the fact that
the franchise will be moving back closer to home. The only serious downside I can
see, with the NHL doing its thing, is this can’t happen immediately.
