Photo: Phantoms Winger Eric Wellwoods Skate Looks Like Something Out of a Horror Movie

Share

Eric Wellwood has had a few cups of coffee with the Flyers
over the past three years, but mostly the 23 year old has been toiling away
with the Adirondack Phantoms, the club’s AHL affiliate. After suffering a
bloody and “scary” cut on Sunday, it’s unlikely he’ll see any more action in
the NHL this season, or anywhere else for that matter.

Details are sketchy, but Phantoms head coach Terry Murray told
the Glenn Falls Post-Star (via Deadspin) that Wellwood may have cut himself
with his own skate while taking a tumble along the boards. Regardless of how it
happened, here are some snippets of the details that ensued:

    • • A severed tendon could be clearly seen in the wound

  • • Wellwood was reportedly close to being in serious danger
from the blood loss, having cut the artery.

  • • One player said Wellwood’s skate filled with blood, calling
    it “scary.”

Seriously, it looks like that skate was used to slay
somebody.

The good news is Wellwood underwent a successful surgery to
stop the bleeding and close the wound. He’ll have a second surgery this week to
repair tendons and ligaments, which may include damage to his Achilles
according to the report.
