Sharks Place Niitty on Waaiivers

Jan 25, 2012, 6:07 PM EDT

Former Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki is on the open market after being waived by San Jose.

Former Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki, the man who single-handedly forced the Atlanta Thrashers franchise to pack up, move to Winnipeg, and live under an assumed identity, is hoping for a change of scenery of his own.

After four seasons with the Flyers, the Finnish netminder plied his trade in Tampa last season before signing with San Jose last summer. His time with the Sharks may not be long, though, as he was informed (second hand) that he’d been waived. while vacationing during the All-Star break. From the sounds of his comments in this Puck Daddy piece, he’s more than ready to move on. The trouble may be finding a suitor willing to take on his contract, a fact he willingly admits. [Puck Daddy]
