Video: Brayden Schenn suffers nasty gash from skate blade, scores overtime winner for Flyers

There have been numerous bright spots for the Philadelphia Flyers on their most recent six-game road trip. But perhaps nothing on the trip has been brighter than the play of Brayden Schenn, who began the trip with a 15-game goalless drought.

On Tuesday night, the 22-year-old forward capped off the Flyers’ road trip in style but not before a scary incident that could have been much worse than it turned out to be.

Schenn deposited the overtime winner past Marty Brodeur 1 minute, 50 seconds into the extra frame for his third goal of the trip and gave the Flyers a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils Thursday night in Newark, N.J. But it’s a minor miracle he even got to that point in the game.

Early in the second period when the Devils lead 1-0, Schenn delivered what seemed to be a rather innocuous check to the Devils’ Danius Zubrus right in front on the Devils’ bench.

But as Zubrus was falling to the ice, his skate blade went into the air, somehow got underneath Schenn’s sweater and gashed Schenn in the abdominal area. The Flyers’ center immediately went down in agony.

When Schenn got back to the bench, cameras caught the Flyers’ training staff tending to the skate blade wound on his abdomen.

Yeah, that looks like it hurt just a little bit.

Thankfully for Schenn and the Flyers, the injury wasn’t serious and Schenn missed just a single shift.

As far as the game itself goes, the Flyers once again found themselves down heading into the third period on this trip when they headed into Tuesday’s final stanza down 1-0.

But Olympic snub Claude Giroux told Team Canada to shove it when he wristed a power-play goal past Brodeur to tie the game.

Just over 4 minutes later, Scott Hartnell took a cross-ice feed from Schenn on an odd-man rush and slid the puck under Brodeur to give his team a 2-1 lead.

It was not all smooth sailing though as the Flyers - who were on a power play at the time - gave up a goal to the Devils’ Michael Ryder with Brodeur pulled and just 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the contest 2-2 and send it into overtime.

It was in the overtime when Schenn took a beautiful slap pass from Nicklas Grossmann and slammed it home for the Flyers’ victory and a completed 5-1-0 road trip where the team earned 10 of a possible 12 points. It was the Orange and Black’s third third-period comeback win on the six-game road swing.

Not too shabby.

Ray Emery, who has now started all three games against New Jersey this season, was solid between the pipes with 31 saves in the win.

Guess what?

The Flyers finally return home Wednesday night after 11 days on the road when they host the Montreal Canadiens at Wells Fargo Center.
