Twitter can be a double-edged sword. Many young athletes become infamous for screwing up on social media when they don’t know how to filter themselves and inevitably wind up in trouble. But then there are those unique times like Sunday night when you see a young kid like Philadelphia’s own Ty Garland react to becoming one of the most talked about stories in the world. Literally.

The kid was on top of the world and enjoying the moment.

Garland became a trending topic worldwide on Sunday for hitting the clutch game-winning shot that sent the No. 13 seed La Salle Explorers into the Sweet Sixteen. It was his coining the term “The Southwest Philly Floater” to describe the shot during his postgame interview with analyst Craig Sager that had everyone in the 215 falling in love with and tweeting about him.

And you have to love a kid on national TV giving a shoutout to his Cousin Vern back in West Philly. At least that’s what we all thought. Following the game, Ty set the record straight on Twitter. It’s “Cousin Bern,” with a ‘B.’

Can’t be messing up Bern’s name, okay?

Then he retweeted this:

As of this writing, Garland has a meager 2,695 followers but that didn’t stop him from going on a fun little tweet spree. He retweeted the likes of Jim Rome mentioning the #SouthwestPhillyFloater and also retweeted a La Salle fan in Los Angeles — where the team plays in the Sweet 16 on Thursday — who had already created a t-shirt honoring the occasion complete with Garland’s unique dreadlocks.

Enjoy the spotlight, Ty. You earned it. And all of Philly is hoping your moment shines a little longer.
