Enjoy Some Michael Martinez This Weekend

With Freddy Galvis already on the roster and ready to step in and play second base, many fans were hoping for the chance to see Darin Ruf or even Josh Fields come up and hit some home runs off the bench while Chase Utley rested on the DL. Instead, the Phillies called up Michael Martinez.

The Inquirer's Matt Gelb notes that it's not because he had a red-hot bat down in Lehigh Valley:

Martinez, 30, was hitting .239/.306/.284 in 121 plate appearances for triple-A Lehigh Valley. That was just slightly better than his career majors line of .188/.241/.272 in 356 plate appearances. His .590 OPS was the worst among all current IronPigs position players.

Woof.

The folks over at Crashburn Alley have a wonderful breakdown of the Phillies decision in flowchart form.
