Giants Deny Report That They've Acquired Hunter Pence

Things got a little strange around 1 a.m. ET last night.

It was about that time Dennis O'Donnell, the sports director for CBS 5 (KPIX) in San Francisco, tweeted the Phillies and Giants have a deal in place that would send Hunter Pence to the Giants, pending ownership approval.

The report blew up quickly, before many dismissed it as a prank.

But, shortly thereafter, Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea tweeted that he called the KPIX newsroom, which confirmed O'Donnell's twitter account actually belonged to him and was not a hoax. Giants VP Bobby Evans denied the report via text, writing there is "no truth to the rumor."

CBS 5 ran its report on its 11 o'clock news (PT), complete with a graphic of Pence in Giants garb (which you can see above) and the acknowledgement that the team was denying the story.

This is not the first indication that the Giants are interested in Pence. Fox Sports' John Morosi
tweeted last Friday afternoon that the Giants want a righthanded outfield
bat and were "expected to make a push" for Pence should he be made
available before the trade deadline.CSNPhilly's Jim Salisbury has also been reporting Pence could be had if the Phils were blown away by an offer and that the Giants are one of the many teams also interested in Shane Victorino.

Stay tuned, we suppose...
