Kendrick’s Awful First Proves Too Big a Hole As Phillies Fall to Bucs 5-4

Jun 28, 2012, 5:04 PM EDT

The Phillies bullpen didn't give up any runs on Thursday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park but Kyle Kendrick took care of all of that in the first inning. It was a strange performance from KK in which he gave up 5 runs right off the bat in the first frame only to settle in and last seven innings on the day giving up only two hits over the final six innings.

Aside from that awful no good very bad first inning, the Phillies held the Pirates in check. Thursday callups Brian Sanches and Jeremy Horst both pitched a scoreless frame apiece.

The Phillies created some chances, but simply couldn’t dig all the way out.

The bats fought back from the earlier deficit, mostly with the help of long balls from Hunter Pence and Kratz Kratz Kratz Kratz Kratz, but they couldn’t tie things up or take the lead in the ninth despite getting the leadoff man on board and eventually over to third.

Just another day in Phillies baseball.

The Fightins head down to Florida to take on the Fish for a three game set. Time to win some division games, what do you say?
