Report: Phillies Interested in Giancarlo Stanton, Probably Kate Upton Too

Share

Giancarlo Stanton is out of the lineup for the Marlins this weekend. That's nice for the Phillies. He's also not currently available on the trading market. But if he were, the Phillies are interested.

CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury
has it on good authority that if the Miami slugger should ever hit the block, the Phillies want a chance to wine and dine the Marlins.

According to a major-league executive with knowledge of the situation,
the Phillies over the last several months have made “multiple” inquiries
to the Marlins about Stanton’s availability in a trade. The Phils, like
every other team salivating over the 23-year-old slugger, have been
told he’s not available.

As many have pointed out, the Phillies aren't exactly in a position of strength when it comes to dealing for a stud such as Stanton. Despite Ruben Amaro's best efforts to restock the bare cupboard (see first Cliff Lee trade), their minor league system is not flush with highly-coveted prospects.

So, to recap: if Giancarlo Stanton becomes available, the Phillies want a shot. Their chances are probably not great.

Salisbury also takes a look at what pieces the Phillies have that might be worth unloading come this summer's trade deadline if Ruben decides the team will once again be in sell mode. There's the usual suspect of Cliff Lee, but also guys whose trade away from Philadelphia would be quite difficult to see: Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, even Carlos Ruiz.

Worth a read today.
