  1. Phillies Rally in the Ninth, Falter in Extras, Still Took Two of Three off Giants

    May 8, 2013, 8:42 PM EDT

    Frandsen, Utley

Bad news: the Phillies lost to the Giants 4-3 in 10 innings on Wednesday. Good news: the Phils showed some fight, and after the dust settled, they still had taken two out of three off of the reigning world champions. Not only was it a positive way to kick off a west coast swing, plus…

  2. Ridin’ Solo: Phillies Lack of Multi-Run HRs is Not Good

    May 8, 2013, 11:30 AM EDT

    Image (2) ph_rollins_640x480.jpg for post 489557

No doubt the fireworks have been fun lately. But that each of the Phillies last 12 home runs have been solo shots — in this case, the product of poor on-base ability — is less than good. Eventually, that inability to optimize what little power they’re getting is going to hurt. As if it hasn’t already. Take…

  3. The Marlins Are Bad and the Phillies Should Beat Them Tonight

    May 2, 2013, 6:18 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/1010987.jpg

Forget about the Phillies for a moment. The Marlins (8-20) co-own the worst record in baseball with the Astros. They rank in the bottom two of every major offensive category, with a .229/.289/.312 line, and are on pace to score fewer than 500 runs this year, which would make for a 43-year first.

  4. Cliff Lee Has Actually Fared Well After High Pitch Count Outings

    May 1, 2013, 4:44 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/1006235.jpg

Cliff Lee will face a former team that traded him away for the first time tonight on their home turf when he takes on the Indians in Cleveland. He’s got the attitude you’d expect. Lee’s coming off a 122 pitch outing over the weekend, but that hasn’t been a bad thing for the ace.

  5. Halladay and Chooch, Together Again: Will It Help Roy’s Command?

    Apr 30, 2013, 5:46 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/1011101.jpg

If there’s a better bromance in Philadelphia than Carlos Ruiz and Roy Halladay, I’d like to hear who it involves.

Also, a guest post on Roy Halladay’s lack of command this season. All below the fold.

  6. The Phillies Defense Hasn’t Been Great, But Their Range Is Worse

    Apr 24, 2013, 12:15 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/1009873.jpg

    Sure, the boots look bad.

But worse for the Phillies in the field this year are the plays that, well, aren’t.

Despite an handful of errors so far — including two in the first two frames in last night’s loss as well as a could’ve-been-made play by Jimmy Rollins that let the first scored runner reach — the Phillies’ .980 fielding percentage is actually solid: eighth in all of baseball.

  7. The Chooch Cometh: Ten Days Out, What Can Carlos Ruiz’s Return Mean to Phillies?

    Apr 18, 2013, 2:04 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/833395.jpg

Erik Kratz and Humberto Quintero have combined to hit .167/.164/.278 so far this season, with each of those being in the bottom four in baseball among catchers, and the OBP being dead-last.

And so, Carlos Ruiz becomes the Phillies early-season white knight, scheduled to ride in 10 games and 10 days from now, when his 25-game suspension ends – even though he’s presumed to be less than he was last season.

  8. Who Are These Guys? Meet Your 2013 Philadelphia Phillies

With an estimated $159 million in payroll this year, the Phillies have the third-most expensive ball club in Major League Baseball this year. They also have 15 players who weren’t on the Opening Day roster in 2012, whether it was because they were on the disabled list, in the minors, or playing for another team at the time. In this primer we draw the curtain on the 25 players who made the club in ‘13, check in on some stats from spring training, and even take a peek at who might be next in line.

  9. @FakeWIPCaller’s Essential Phillies Preview

The outrageous, indefensible anti-Philly bias of the national media has once again reared its ugly, prejudiced head.

The national media, showing they once again just don’t get it, and continue to exhibit a risible contempt for this city and its fans, are refusing to pick the Phillies to win the NL East. ESPN has them finishing third, and out of their panel of almost 40 experts, not a single one picked the Phils to win the division, not even alleged “Philly Guy” Jayson Stark.

This is pretty cool. And yes, we’re suckers. Check out the sweet six second trailer for MLB The Show featuring a new slugger the Phillies must have acquired this offseason unbeknownst to me.

Darin Ruf hit one last huge blast on Friday before being sent down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley where he’ll start the 2013 season.

  13. Charlie Manuel Should Have Plenty of Options with the Phillies’ Lineup Card This Year

    Feb 22, 2013, 1:31 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/869093.jpg

Suppose Charlie Manuel wants give Chase Utley a day off while Freddy Galvis is covering for Jimmy Rollins on the disabled list. No sweat. Keep Galvis at shortstop, have Michael Young start at second base, and let Kevin Frandsen fill in at third. Problem solved. Imagine the Phillies are facing a particularly tough lefty, and…

As if you needed any more options to raise your cholesterol while taking in a Phillies game. Those planning trips to Citizens Bank Park will have a new hometown flavor to choose from at the concession stands: Federal Donuts. The Passyunk Post reports (via Foobooz) that Federal Donuts will have a stand at the Alley…

  16. Nationals, Braves Numbers 1 and 2 in SI Offseason Power Rankings, Phillies 16th

    Feb 8, 2013, 4:02 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/966277.jpg

One of the big arguments we keep hearing as to why the Phillies have been such a disappointment this offseason is, “Look how much better the rest of the NL East got,” specifically the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves. Sports Illustrated clearly believes there’s something to that.

  17. Today Is and Feels Like Groundhog Day

    Feb 2, 2013, 4:47 AM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/991913.jpg

The other day I asked why people are so negative about the Phillies this offseason, and somebody suggested it was because of the pessimism created by the Eagles, 76ers, and Flyers. Seeing as many fans are so specific with their criticisms of the Phillies, I tend to think there is more to it than that (although why you all hate Delmon Young so much is beyond me). The point that the overall vibe surrounding Philadelphia sports is depressed right now is legit however.

  18. Whats With All the Negativity over the Phillies?

    Jan 30, 2013, 2:45 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/902799.jpg

The Phillies finished 2012 with an 81-81 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2006. For some reason, this came as a relative surprise to some fans, even though we knew full well they weren’t going to have Ryan Howard for half a season, and it wasn’t long into spring training before we came to a similar realization about Chase Utley. That’s the heart of the club’s batting order – a former league MVP and a five-time All Star.

  19. Atlanta Trades for the Other Upton Brother

    Jan 24, 2013, 12:14 PM EDT

    http://www.the700level.com/images/988575.jpg

The Atlanta Braves upgraded their outfield in a big way on Thursday by trading for Arizona Diamondbacks young slugger Justin Upton, reuniting him with his older brother B.J. to form one impressive outfield along with Jayson Heyward. The cost for the other Upton brother was not cheap, however, as the Braves gave up Martin Prado and a number of prospects.

  20. Man Alive, There Are Men Alive Out There! Kendrick and Phils Light Up Bucs

    Jul 3, 2010, 10:03 PM EDT

The Phillies narrowly avoided losing their third straight of a four-game set out in Pittsburgh, edging out the Buccos by a 12-4 count.  Boats lined up outside to see the holiday weekend's fireworks with the gorgeous PNC Park and the Roberto Clemente Bridge as their backdrop, but the blasts went off a bit early tonight.…

  21. Phillies Involved in Peavy Deal? Updates From Vegas Heating Up

    Feb 8, 2008, 10:05 PM EDT

Even with starting pitching at the top of the Phillies’ self-proclaimed list of priorities this off-season, it was shocking to see the following headline out of the Winter Meetings today: 7:29 p.m. — Phillies enter Peavy fray Yeah, don’t get excited. The report, courtesy of Ken Rosenthal, links the Phillies to a possible Jake Peavy…

  22. What Happens in Vegas Gets Reported on By Lots of People on the Internet

    Feb 8, 2008, 3:51 PM EDT

Baseball big wigs are in Las Vegas this week to wheel and deal and try to position their respective rosters to do what the Phillies did in 2008: win the world fricking championship. Not much of note has taken place besides the retirement of Greg Maddox. We did hear one rumor of a Mets beat…
