As has been mentioned numerous times in this multi-part off-season review, one of the unquestionably smart things the Sixers did last off-season was to not take on any long-term contracts while rebuilding their team on the fly. Consequently, a number of guys we picked up while re-stocking our rotation–now missing such previous contributors as Lou Williams, Jodie Meeks, Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand–are already coming off the books, allowing us to get a trial sample of their work, and allowing us to make long-term decisions about their futures at season’s end.

This group includes Nick Young, Dorell Wright, Damien Wilkins, and Royal Ivey–though unfortunately, not Kwame Brown, unless Tony DiLeo makes him an offer he can’t refuse (free trip to Hershey Park?) and he opts out of the second year of his contract.

Quick refresher: Andrew Bynum is a professional basketball player in the NBA who didn’t play for the Philadelphia 76ers this season.

Alas, he appears to be doing what any sensible human being who made something in the area of an eight figure paycheck over the last year or so. He’s traveling the world.

On one hand, Sixers guard Evan Turner has a point, the middle of the road is a place where a goose goes to get killed. On the other hand, sometimes geese have to traverse dangerous lanes in order to get to the rim of the pond for food, sustenance, and to go on living. However you feel about ET giving the geese some lip, you have to have mad respect for that mother goose. She’s right up in there, not backing down from Turner and his thousand pound motor vehicle, sticking up for her goslings. Love that kind of spark.

That boy Jrue, he nice. As nice as fellow point guard sensations Damian Lillard of Portland and John Wall of Washington, and as nice as Harlem-bred rapper A$AP Rocky, all of whom show up for this bizarre-but-kinda-cool Adidas commercial featuring the three young NBA stars playing basketball inside a gigantic shoe, their tale narrated by the aforementioned Rocky.

As if we all needed another reason to love Sir Charles any more. This video of Shaquille O’Neal and Barkley having a bench-press off in some strange promotion for that new Marky Mark and The Rock movie is not embeddable, but if you click over to NBA.com you can watch the competition get serious.

People love to give Sixers CEO Adam Aron and the team’s social media flack for their less-than-stellar track record using social tools such as Twitter. But to be fair, when we rip them for being boneheads, we should also point out when they nail one.

The Sixers’ job is also made a tougher sell by the franchise’s current lack of direction. No coach with name value, who will surely have offers from other franchises, will want with this job without knowing exactly what the hell is going to happen with Andrew Bynum. Then again, that’s exactly what makes Shaw’s candidacy so interesting.

It’s a long NBA post-season, and while Andrew Bynum is busy lighting various rooms in his house on fire for no particular reason, the other Philadelphia 76ers only know one way of coping with the spare time and restlessness: Endless tweeting.
