Adios, Barajas and Nunez

Share

Todd Zolecki reported
yesterday that the Phillies would not be picking up the options on
"catcher" Rod Barajas and 3B Abraham Nunez. I won't lie, I thought
Barajas was a decent signing last year, but he turned out to be awful,
losing the starting job and eventually the backup work in embarrassing
fashion. We've known for months that he wouldn't be back, and after
both played fairly well in 2007, I think Carlos Ruiz and Chris Coste
are likely to remain the 1 and 2 catchers next season.

Nunez is a
one-dimensional player, with lots of talent in the field but little at
the plate. His departure and Wes Helms' complete disappointment of a
season are a good sign that the Phils will seek to upgrade at 3B again
this off-season. Hopefully the Yankees will re-sign A-Rod, because if
they don't, the Phils have little shot at Mike Lowell, who would be a
perfect fit for this team.
