Big Rube Wants to Help Change Baseball

Share

A nice piece in today's Daily News by Stan Hochman talks about the lack of inner-city interest in baseball and how Big Rube would like to change that.

"I tell Jimmy Rollins he's terrific," Reuben Harley said the other day.
"I tell Ryan Howard he's great. And then I tell 'em, if they walked
through North Philly, none of the kids would know who they are. I wanna
change that. And I'm gonna do it."

I enjoyed this part.

"I took 10 kids to that day game where the Phils swept the Mets. The
kids are still talking about that one. I work with an anti-crime group,
'Put it Down.' I take kids from that program to the ballpark. I've
taken hundreds of kids to games and most of them come away loving the
game."

It's worth reading the whole article.
