Flyers Notes: Leighton Hurt, Sick Giroux Goal Video, Fans Interview Lappy

There's only one loss that matters in the preseason, and that's an injury. Last night, the Flyers edged the Maple Leafs in a shootout, but took an L in the goaltender health department. Michael Leighton had to be pulled before the shootout started due to a back injury, or rather, an aggravation of a previous back injury that had flown under the radar through camp. Frank Seravalli reports that Leights strained his back while exercising sometime this summer. While Paul Holmgren says the team is "cautiously optimistic" about the injury, the rest of us are cringing at the memory of dressing seven goalies last season. [Daily News]

On a brighter note, the Flyers did win that game, and Nik Zherdev scored twice in regulation. Travis at Broad Street Hockey has some nice player notes, unless you're Andrej Meszaros, who has now landed in the BSH doghouse in consecutive preseason games. [BroadStreetHockey]

Also, Claude Giroux did THIS in the shootout. [Video below]

I don't know how to add songs to YTs posted by other people, but for this, I'd have gone with Love Light. Or some song about having both your skates past the goal line before releasing the puck.

The photo of Leighton above is by our friend Jim Tryon, whose Flyers and Phillies pictures you've no doubt seen here before. He has a nice Voorhees gallery up on Flickr, with a few "unknowns" in need of labeling.

Jim also sent me a link to an interview that the guys at Flyers Hive did with Ian Laperriere this week. The audio is somewhat raw with all the other discussions going on in the locker room, but there's a transcript below. [The Flyers Hive
