Working with an extension beyond the 3PM deadline, the Flyers traded a 6th round pick to the Sharks to obtain defenseman Kyle McLaren, who has spent the season in the AHL due to San Jose's salary cap needs. McLaren is a big d-man with a sizable ($2.5mil) salary, and his acquisition is likely intended primarly to give the Flyers more depth at the blue line should any injuries occur, rather than a new everyday player. He's another lefty, something the Flyers are already stocked with, but he's also 6'4, 235. His cap hit is the reason he's already passed through waivers twice this season, and he may be a Phantom until called upon by the Flyers. Our defense corps was decimated by injuries last season, and this move is Homer's insurance policy if Kimmo gets another blod clot or Braydon takes another shot to the face.
More to come as we get more details on the Flyers plans for McLaren.
