Football Food For Fans ~ Week 14 2008 Season, originally uploaded by Mark K_NJ

You'll never hear me complain about a well cooked piece of steak. So I was happy to see Mark go to the New York strip as a key part of his football food this week.

From Mark's flickr page:

Eagles at Giants. In December. In the cold. In the wind. Lotsa ripped up knuckles on those two squads tonight.

So, I did something alittle different today (with a varied degree of sucess, I'll say that right up front.)

Rather than trying to do a "New York food" today (remember, in the first matchup between these two teams, I did hot pastrami,)
I did something alittle different. I wanted to recreate a meal from a
great NY restaurant. Of course, there are a ton to pick from. But, so
that I could incorporate NY Strip steak, I chose to do a meal from Ben Benson's steakhouse (123 W. 52nd Street in Manhattan). What I picked was a close variation of something called Steak A La Stone.

Sauteed some sliced onion and pimentos in some EVOO. Little salt, little pepper.

Then I painted two NY Strips with olive oil, and sprinkled on some gray
salt and fresh ground pepper. Seared the in my cast iron skillet for 2
1/5 minutes each side, then finished them for about 9 minutes in a 425
degree oven.

I also toasted up some good Italian bread, then spooned the onion and
pimento over the bread, and put the sliced NY Strip over the top.

In the glass, some Stella Artoris, left over from last night's holiday party.

A hot dish for a cold, cold day.

For real, I think I'm going to have to track down a nice steak dinner this evening. It likely won't be as tasty as that I bet though.

Thanks to Mark as always and you can check out all of the food archives here.
