Happening Elsewhere: Feliz Freed From the Astros, Headed to St. Louis

Remember when the Cardinals came to down early in the summer, and that David Freese guy was on a Musial-esque tear of destruction? Well, neither does St. Louis, apparently, since they deemed themselves so desperate for production from the third-base position that they traded for an old friend of ours--Pedro Feliz, previously marooned as the only member of the Houston Astros with even a vague recollection of the sensation of winning baseball. (Freese has been out with injury for a month or so now.)

The Cardinals sent over minor league pitcher David Carpenter for the rental of Pete Happy, currently hitting .222 with four home runs. "He ranks up there with almost any third baseman in the game today," said Cards GM John Mozeliak, which if true, is an absolutely stunning indictment of the third-base position in the Major Leagues today.

My main reaction to this deal is one of disappointment--that Astros GM Ed Wade would be so willing to part with Feliz. Not like his play deserved any kind of organizational commitment or anything, but c'mon Ed--what happened to the gameplan of building an entire roster around ex-Phillies? Trading away Feliz is just gonna make it that much harder--now you're gonna have to run a couple gallons of formaldehyde through Abraham Nunez to re-secure that third base position and really fulfill the dream. Typical short-sighted late-season dealing.

Hope not to see you this post-season, Pedro. No offense.
