In Case You Were Curious, Charles Barkley’s Thoughts on the George Zimmerman Trial…

Jul 19, 2013, 1:30 PM EDT

I have no interest in using this post to debate the merits of the George Zimmerman trial, but Sir Charles’ take is worth mention.

Barkley was on CNBC’s Closing Bell on Thursday and in a one-on-one interview with host Maria Bartiromo was asked if he “had any thoughts on the George Zimmerman verdict.”

Without any hesitation, Chuck offered his take. For what it’s worth, he says he agreed with the verdict, seemed to paint both Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin at fault, and then issued some criticism at the way the media covered the Martin’s death and Zimmerman’s trial.

But it’s these words — from Deadspin via NewsBusters (which obviously has its own highly specific bent) — that offer his best perspective:

BARKLEY: But it was just a bad situation. And like I said, the main thing I feel bad for, it gives every black and white person who is racist a platform to vent their ignorance.

That’s the thing that bothers me the most because I watched this trial closely and I watch all these people on television talking about it. A lot of people have a hidden agenda. You know, they want their racist views, whether they are white or black –

BARTIROMO: The bias comes out.

BARKLEY: The bias, it definitely comes out. It was a bad situation, we all lost. And I feel bad for his parents. You don’t ever want to see anybody lose a kid.

After some people in South Philadelphia mistook Phillies postgame fireworks for a celebration last Saturday night, Charles might have a point.

His full remarks here.

Try to remain civil in the comments, I guess.

    Very well-put, Sir Charles.

Spot on Charles, love it. “BARKLEY: The bias, it definitely comes out. It was a bad situation, we all lost.” – Now we see Barack Obama’s bias coming out. Barkley called out Barack’s bias before he even came out and gave this desperate speech to win points with his liberal Chicago thug friends. He is exploiting a tragedy for liberal politcal gain. You don’t have to be black for corrupt government union thugs to profile, harrass, and try and extort you. I’ve been bullied by police officers my whole life, it’s not exclusive to black people. (1/5 of New Jersey police officers retire on disability and abuse the system, these people are bigger crooks than anyone they’ve ever arrested, disability = jackpot, millions of dollars for free, if this country wasn’t full of braindead uneducated sloths they might realize what is happening to our country) . I got pulled over for driving in the left lane of a two lane road at 8:00 in the morning when me and the cop were the only two cars on the road, he wrote me a $250 dollar ticket and searched my car. That also includes 100$ surcharges from the state of New Jersey for 3 years. The liberal government establishment is out of control, this has nothing to do with race as the president implies. This whole thing with Barack Obama is disguisting, he is truly a disgrace, you think he cares about chrnoic unemployment? His true colors are coming out.

Switch off Fox News and learn to think for yourself for at least 5 minutes a day. You might one day realize how out of place this comment is.

      • Jeff - Jul 19, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Funny how the president remarking on racial disparity and attempting to clarify why black people feel they have a target on their backs is construed as biased thuggery…There was no political stint, everything he said was fact and his bias is coming from his experience as A BLACK MAN! I think he knows a thing or two, and has the right as the first african amerixan president and a law professor, to attempt to try and clarify the black perspective. His comments are an attempt to stear the discussion in a more positive and productive path, and there was nothing political or evil about it. And anyone who denies t that there’s racial disparity and tension (to say the least) in this country, or dismisses a candid and thoughtful remark on the subject as an attack or” liberal thuggishnesh”, or whatever other cloaked racist terms they can think of, is a complete moron.

Whew, The700level mods with the save. THANK you for getting rid of most of the brain-dead hate that was permeating this article.

BTW this guy is so desperate for his views to be validated that he actually took the time to log out, delete his browser cookies and continuously click the thumbs down on the posts of people who disagreed with him. Just an awe-inspiring commitment to ignorance.

    • Nick - Jul 19, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Funny how nothing about this post had anything to do with politics, yet Mr. Morgan somehow connects it to politics with some blah blah blah rant about the horrors of being white in American. Poor you.

Little hint, no one cares about your dumb political opinion on a sports web site.

      • Brett Morgen - Jul 19, 2013 at 4:59 PM

The Zimmerman case is highly political, as evidenced by the speech your king just gave. Get a clue.

    • - Jul 19, 2013 at 4:55 PM

This is an article about a local sports star making an intelligent comment on a national story. You’ve taken it to a whole different place. As a conservative I’m telling you that your weird, out-of-place rant makes the rest of us look bad and makes people take your opinion far less seriously… like how people react to the guy on the corner screaming about the end of the world. Yeah, that’s you right now.

Please just don’t do this anymore.

    • Nick Menta - Jul 19, 2013 at 5:17 PM

maybe you shouldn’t have been in the left lane?

      • Brett Morgen - Jul 19, 2013 at 5:45 PM

I was about to make a left turn, but it turns out I had to be in the right lane to make the turn to get to Walmart, as is typical in New Jersey, I didn’t know this because I hadn’t been in the area, I recently moved to Marlton, NJ. The police extorted me for no reason at 8:00 on a Sunday morning, me and him were the only people on the road. Government union thugs have become so bloated and underfunded they will do anything to extort good, hardworking citizens with full time jobs. Only 47% of adults in America have a full time job, obviously you aren’t one of them, some people actually work for their money in this country.

      • Nick Menta - Jul 19, 2013 at 5:52 PM

…wait, I’M NOT GETTING PAID FOR THIS?!!?! Enrico, I quit.

      • Wow... - Jul 19, 2013 at 6:15 PM

Lol 47%? You realize that talking point stat was referring to the percentage of people who pay income tax, and that it was deemed to be misleading because a big chunk of that percentage have jobs, but their salaries are so low that they dont meet the governments mark for being aableto pay federal income tax…this is the last thing ill respond to because a. im actually going to my job and b. to try and save Menta from going crazy…but for gods sakes man, inform yourself before you opine.

    • Wow... - Jul 19, 2013 at 5:44 PM

You talk about bias yet you basically infer that the president and his friends are thugs…Gee its a wonder why a lot of the african american community is apprehensive towards the criminal justice system.

      • Nick Menta - Jul 19, 2013 at 5:57 PM

      • Wow... - Jul 19, 2013 at 6:02 PM

Sure…Keep invoking the term “thug” when discussing a racially charged case or talking about the nations first african american president. People will obviously realize that youre not referring to black people. Theyd obviously be able to tell the difference between you and every racist in the country that uses the word thug in place of the n-word to get away with being prejudiced.

      • Brett Morgen - Jul 19, 2013 at 6:19 PM

“People will obviously realize that youre not referring to black people. Theyd obviously be able to tell the difference between you and every racist in the country that uses the word thug in place of the n-word to get away with being prejudiced.”

There is something called racial demagoguery, which is what you are doing here. The things you are saying about me are hateful and disgusting, I don’t even know why allowed them (oh that’s right, because you’re a bunch of Philly liberals). Keep calling everyone who disagrees with your irresponsible and America destroying views a racist, it’s been working for Kathleen Sebelius and the liberal establishment just fine.

      • Mitch Cumstein - Jul 19, 2013 at 6:24 PM

Of course this conservative think tank (The 700 level) orders and reports on Wrestling PPVs. Further packing the pockets of right wing politicians like Linda McMahon.

I’m not sure what Jerry Lawler had to say about Zimmerman, but you’re right Brett, he ALWAYS makes it political… Typical Jerry.

      • Jeff - Jul 19, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Lol…Brett, youre the one calling everyone who disagrees with you thugs or the evil liberal establishment or philly liberals. And when someone points that out youre simply bait and switching them and crying about being insulted…Which, by the way, –spoiler alert–people on the Internet insult other people on the Internet. Grow a spine.

And wow… didnt even call you a racist. He simply pointed out that youre claim of being not racist is a moot point when every comment you make fits right in wwith the rederick of actual racists…Lay off the sauce man.

If only Trayvon hadn’t stood his ground against a stalker with a gun, he’d be alive.

  4. brandonphilly - Jul 19, 2013 at 8:16 PM

I was impressed with Sir Charles’ response. The case itself isn’t black-and-white (no pun intended) and has a heckuva lotta grey area. There were two sides to the story from that night and the truth is somewhere in the middle. That was a very mature and wise response on his part. Thanks for posting, Nick.

  5. Onelovvve - Jul 20, 2013 at 1:33 AM

Boy since when did gettn your a** kicked become a free pass to Murder a person .
The Law has never been in a black mans corner so whatever Charles says is just more gravy for his Massa’s potato’s to make him look good. He has never ment or done anything for the black community so really his comments show clearly what he hates when he looks in the mirror.

    • psudrozz - Jul 21, 2013 at 11:06 AM

i would say getting your head smashed into concrete repeatedly is a little different then getting your ass kicked. you should probably go back and review the merits of the case.

“The law has never been in a black man’s corner”. OJ comes to mind.

Nice comment about Charles being on the plantation just because he doesn’t act like how you think black people should act, you racist hypocritical moron.

A hispanic man defended himself, killed a black kid, and was acquitted by an all female jury. but somehow people like to blame whitey on this one.

  6. psudrozz - Jul 21, 2013 at 11:06 AM

if there were no racism, more than a few people would be out of a job and unelectable.

Ok so lets pick this up again. Since I think black ppl are supposed to be a certain way.
My roots come from successful African Americans. Business owners, community leaders, ect. Ppl who know our struggle and acknowledge the things that effect our ppl like, Police brutality, poverty, unsolved murders. Missing children. Black men getting killed for their organs which can be transplanted in any race or blood type. “Very valuable” I can go in for ever but that is no use, one who doesn’t experience these circumstances cant identify with the issue. If you live in America and know the history, you would not say ignorant things like OJ Simpson.. Really? Where is OJ at now? How many ppl of color make up these privately owned prisons that are being built evryday in this country? The elite make Billions off a persons struggle and will to survive. Take off your blinders and look the world from another’s prospective. This world is full of injustices of all ppl. Im all about unity but Im constantly reminded of the oppression when stuff such as this happens and is just swept under the rug.
Funny us humans are so disconnected from our source. We get caught up in earthly matters that only push us away from spirit. I love all ppl, we are all connected to the source. The day is gonna come when we all wake up though… Human life is a valuable gift.
      God is love..
