Philadelphia Flyers-New York Rangers 2014 Stanley Cup Playoff Round 1 Schedule

The Philadelphia Flyers’ postseason destiny was sealed over the (gorgeous) weekend. A feisty 4-3 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday meant the orange and black clinched third place in the Metropolitan Division and, as you likely have heard, the right to meet the New York Rangers in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The seven-game series opens on Thursday at Madison Square Garden, and it has all the makings of a classic.

New York narrowly edged out Philadelphia for second place in the Metro by just two points. The teams also split the regular season series with two wins apiece. Neither was able to claim a victory in their opponent’s building.

The Rangers last won at the Wells Fargo Center on March 26, 2013. The Flyers’ last win at MSG was February 20, 2011—clearly a storyline to monitor.

This marks the 11th time the Flyers have drawn the Rangers in the postseason, but somewhat remarkably, the first since 1997. Full first-round schedule below:

Game 1: Thursday, April 17, 7 p.m. @ NYR (CNBC)
Game 2: Sunday, April 20, Noon @ NYR (NBC)
Game 3: Tuesday, April 22, 8 p.m. @ PHI (CNBC)
Game 4: Friday, April 25, 7 p.m. @ PHI (CNBC)
*Game 5: Sunday, April 27, Noon @ NYR (NBC)
*Game 6: Tuesday, April 29, TBD @ PHI
*Game 7: Wednesday, April 30 TBD @ NYR

*if necessary

Should the orange and black manage to advance, they’ll face the winner of the Pittsburgh Penguins-Columbus Blue Jackets series in Round 2.

Give the NHL’s new division-based playoff format credit for providing intriguing matchups. Not that the league needed to infuse any more drama into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the idea of playing your top two rivals in the first and second rounds of the postseason in order to reach the Eastern Conference Finals has a certain appeal to it. Happy hunting, Flyers.
