Phils Re-Sign Aaron Rowand, Master of the Face-First Catch

In a vain attempt to distract us from Puntgate ’07, the Phillies and CF Aaron Rowand have agreed to a one-year deal worth $4.35 million, plus some incentives. The deal prevents the two sides going to arbitration, which the Phillies still face for Chase Utley, Brett Myers, and Geoff Geary. Rowand made a big impact in his first season with the team, and he was a fan favorite even before his run in with the wall, so I’m glad to hear they signed him for another season. It’s also still possible they’ll try to deal him for bullpen help as the season approaches.

In other Phillies news, the team also claimed Seattle’s Greg Dobbs off waivers today. Dobbs is a corner infielder who will essentially serve as a pinch left-handed batter if he makes the squad. If…

Citing league sources, FOX Sports reports that the pitching-starved Blue Jays tried unsuccessfully to acquire Myers from the Phils for ’06 first-half phenom Alex Rios. I like Rios a lot, but I’m glad the Phillies passed on that one.
