Phils Sign 3B Wes Helms

Well, he is an upgrade over Abe Nunez at the plate.  That's for sure.

ESPN is reporting that the Phillies inked 3B Wes Helms to a two year deal worth somewhere in the $5.5 to $6 million dollar range.  Word is he signed with the Phillies after Pat Gillick told him he'd get the everyday job at the hot corner.

The Phillies were rumored to be trying to get UPenn alum Mark DeRosa to come play third, but he opted for the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.  So it looks like Helms was a back up plan.  Most Phillies fan, myself included, don't know a ton about Helms.  He wasn't the sexy name we were hoping for as the first addition to the 2007 Phillies.  I'm guessing most will criticize the Phillies for the move.  It's not the kind of move that will get me excited, but he could turn into a decent 6 or 7 hitter in a stacked line up if Gillick can land the big gun in Soriano.

In Gillick we trust... for a little while longer at least.
