Reports: Charlie Manuel to rejoin Phillies as senior adviser to Ruben

Jan 15, 2014, 1:54 PM EDT

source: APBut will he bring his lunch to Citizens Bank Park come April in a Wawa bag?

According to reports by 97.5 the Fanatic’s Brian Startare and CSNPhilly’s Jim Salisbury, Charlie Manuel has agreed to return to the Phillies organization in a senior adviser role to the General Manager.

When Manuel was let go back in August, Ruben Amaro Jr. made it clear that there would be some sort of open door left for Charlie to return to the club in some capacity down the road were Manuel open to it. Today, we learned he was.

Salisbury writes:

Manuel, who turned 70 earlier this month, will be a senior adviser to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. He will hold a similar position as Dallas Green. Manuel and Green, of course, are the only managers in club history to win a World Series. Manuel presided over the 2008 club, Green the 1980 club. Manuel won five NL East titles and two NL pennants during his time as Phils manager.

Manuel lives and breathes baseball and he probably feels he still has more to give the game. Phillies fans will always love him for his impressive tenure in Philadelphia which was capped by the magical 2008 World Series win and parade down Broad Street.

There’s still a chance we’ll see Charlie in a pimped out suit riding down Broad Street one more time.

…more on the announcement once it becomes official…

You can never have enough pockets for all those cheatsheets of late 30-something free agents. Probably has thousands of index cards full of washed up, has-beens.

Everyone has flaws, including Charlie and he certainly frustrated me many times. However I don’t care what anyone says, he was the best manager this city has ever seen….he genuinely cares about the team, the organization and the fan base….he’s the grandfather that we all wanted to have but never got to know. He could have taken a role with another team, perhaps a role with a big title. Nope, he’s a Philly and always will be.

I fired you because you couldn’t run my baseball team, so I’ll hire you to help me run my baseball team.
