Moyer agrees to deal with Rockies

Jamie Moyer, now 49, has agreed to a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies.

The deal includes an invitation to the Rockies' major league spring training camp, where Moyer is expected to both compete for a roster spot and mentor the organization's young arms.

While Moyer is more than capable of imparting wisdom in bullpen, it remains to be seen whether he still has the ability to sit down batters.

From the Denver Post: "We think (he's the ultimate pro)," general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "If he can still get people out will be the question."

Age is obviously a factor for the 25-year-veteran, who skipped the 2011 season to undergo Tommy John surgery in the hopes of rejuvenating his aging arm.

Moyer hasn't overpowered a batter in years and surely he won't be doing so now. The key to his return will be whether he can still paint the corners with the same precise control to which he's become accustomed.

For Moyer, who has a made a career pitching the very edges of the strike zone, just one inch -- be it on or off the plate -- could prove the difference between a belated retirement and another shot at the big leagues.
