Sarge Matthews Not Impressive in Debut

The boys of summer made their Comcast debut yesterday against the Yankees in spring training ball.  It was a beautiful Florida day, the sun was shining, the grass was green, and Harry the K's voice was heard on televisions all across the Delaware Valley.  It was a glimpse of warmer months ahead with flashes of Cole Hamels' brilliance.  It gave me that itch.

Fans also got to hear the sultry sounds of Gary "Sarge" Matthews in his new role as part of the Phillies broadcast team.  Level contributer Matt P. suggested Sarge sounds much like the creepy old guy from Family Guy.  Granted, it was their first day as a new crew, but put me down as not impressed.  His voice is very soft and somewhat monotone -- the kind of voice you'd expect to hear doing a PGA event.  Somewhat Ironically, while the Phillies were playing on Comcast on Sunday, the familiar sounds of Scott Graham could be heard on another Comcast station, CN8.  Graham was one of the announcers doing Drexel basketball's game against Virginia Commonwealth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.  Drexel was downed 63-56, leaving them on the bubble.

I realize this was Matthews first day with the new squad and I won't write him off after one game, but it was not an encouraging performance.  Did yesterday's game leave other Phillies fans craving the Graham Slam?  Beerleauger gives a run down of some more serious observations, mainly outfield issues, from yesterday's exhibition.
