Sean McDermott Named Eagles Defensive Coordinator

In a move we all hoped wouldn't be necessary, 950 ESPN's Brian Seltzer is reporting that the Eagles will name Sean McDermott as their defensive coordinator at a 1:00 PM press conference tomorrow. This isn't a knock on McDermott per se, more rather a disappointment that the mastermind of so many great Eagles defenses, Jim Johnson, will not be in the position. There is no word yet as to why Johnson, who has been battling cancer, will not return or if he'll be helping out in any capacity. Obviously, his health comes before football.

Former Eagles great Troy Vincent was quoted as saying opposing offenses will certainly notice the difference in who is calling the defensive plays for the Birds.

From Thursday's Inquirer:

"There is going to be a different perspective about the Eagles'
defense," said Troy Vincent, the former Eagles cornerback who played
for five seasons under Johnson. "It's the same thing in Tampa Bay now
that Monte Kiffin is gone. If you don't think him leaving changes the
way people feel about that defense, then you're fooling yourself.
You're talking about the two people who have been the most consistent
defensive coordinators over the last decade. As an offensive
coordinator, you have to think, 'Let me see what McDermott is going to
do. I know he comes from the same system, but let's see if he's going
to call the same game.' "

Ray Didinger has said he has a lot of confidence in McDermott, noting he's a hard worker and prepares well. If someone has to step in for Jim Johnson, this is the perfect guy.
