Steve Mason is alive and on the ice in New York

Goaltending wasn't really the issue Thursday night.

Stupid penalties, stupid rules (based on bleeding) and all-around sloppy play were far more to blame than anything Ray Emery did or didn't do in his crease.

But here we are on Friday and Steve Mason is back on the ice.

Mason, who was injured in a collision in the second period against the Penguins last Saturday, is now in New York with his teammates. Friday marked Mason's first practice since Tuesday and, barring a setback, he seems on track to start Game 2 on Sunday.

“His health is the most important thing,” Berube said. “I’ve said that all along. I'll talk to him today and see how he feels and talk Jeff Reese the goalie coach and we’ll go from there. He’s going to practice tomorrow."

As for what exactly he was dealing with:

He questioned one reporter who asked about how many concussions he had had in the past (two) and strongly implied that wasn’t the case here.

Mason, who was on the ice with third goalie Cal Heeter and the scratches from Game 1, was seen doing neck-rotation exercises, a good indication that what is really bothering him is whiplash, as many have suspected.
