Stop Asking Charlie If the Offense Is Going to Be Fine, Howard Eskin

Jun 22, 2013, 10:21 AM EDT

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Milwaukee Brewers

“Phillies manager challenges radio personality to fight,” reads the ESPN headline…from April 19, 2007. That was back when WIP mouthpiece Howard Eskin suggested Charlie Manuel throw a tirade to motivate the troops after the team’s 3-9 start to the season, which he appreciated little, waiting for Eskin at his office and challenging him (to quote Eskin quoting Charlie), “I don’t like what you’ve been saying about me for three years and I’m gonna drop your ass right there.”

Well, it appears that happy times are here again. After last night’s groan-worthy home loss to the subpar Mets, Eskin again poked the bull, needling Charlie in the post-game conference about the team’s lagging offense. “Do I know if the rest of the lineup is going to be fine?” snapped Charlie. “If I knew that, don’t you think I’d do something about it? Does anybody else know that, Howard? Do you know that?” That was about it from there, but Eskin continued the goading as Manuel left the podium, jokingly-not-jokingly asking “When are you gonna score ten runs?,” with Charlie jokingly-really-not-jokingly answering “When I knock you out.”

Awesome! Well, the good news on this is that after Eskin and Manuel feuded that time six years ago–after which, Eskin claimed “His problem shouldn’t be with me, it should be with the players that are ultimately going to get him fired”–the Phillies eventually came to life, finishing 89-73 and winning their first NL East title in 14 years. Here’s hoping Eskin is just trying to take one for the team again here, because otherwise, this is pretty needless antagonism.

Lets put Eskin and Manual in the boxing ring with the Phanatic as referee.

Both are pretty insufferable. Instead of Eskin talking scoring 10 runs he should be (and every other local sports journalist) should be asking why this team for the last couple of seasons will get a lead early and then head into cruise control for the rest of game. All teams are guilty of this but the Phils are the biggest abusers of it. Charlie’s lack of team motivation has to factor into it.

Charlie is a giant female reproductive part! Acting like a fake tough guy when one is really an inbred hick full of bluster is a joke. Eskin is doing his job, this team sucks, and Charlie needs to answer “WHEN RUBEN GETS ME SOME GUYS THAT CAN PLAY!”

    • Hiccup - Jun 22, 2013 at 3:20 PM

I find your characterization of Charlie offensive and ignorant. I agree on him needing more qualified and proven players and Ruben is at fault for that but to call somebody a stereotype slur is uncalled for. Charlie must of done something right to earn five titles and a ring so &@#% on you and your bigoted ways.

Charlie answering questions with threats is a joke. And Hiccup; relax, you’ll live longer.

      Not your best, Mostel.

Eskin is a tool, he’s not doing his job. He’s just being a tool like usual. He deserves to be in St. Louis, fake ass Philly guy.

Eskin is the worst of the worst. How this local dingleberry still has a job is a mystery. He thinks he’s Geraldo, and the creepy Hall and Oates beard/hair is more appropriate for a wookie than a “sports personality” of whatever he thinks he is these days… I hear he is consulting on the Ron Burgundy/Anchorman sequel in character development.

What’s weird is Howard Eskin is terrible, yet he’ll always be employed. Baseball coaches have a few bad years and they’re tanked almost immediately. Howard’s on a few bad decades by this point. Guy needs to realize he’s not John Stossel. All I want to see is Charlie follow through with his suggestion and knock that fraud off his pill bottle.

Wow the hits keep on NOT coming. We just got two hit by a guy with 16 career wins.

    • Coondawg - Jun 23, 2013 at 7:26 PM

No doubt the team is inconsistent and down right awful at times, but Harvey is a young phenom who will hive us problems for a long time

      • Mostel - Jun 23, 2013 at 7:31 PM

He can phenom himself vs. some other team. I have nothing to follow all summer if the Phillies continue to stink. We need wins NOW!

I am probably in the minority but I love them both.

The Phillies scored 10 runs last night. HOWARD ESKIN…CHARLIE IS COMING FOR YOU.
