To Brett Myers: PUT THAT COFFEE DOWN.

You are a starter, and we all know coffee is for closers only.

Hopefully this is just spring training filler and has no real possibility of coming true, but Todd Zolecki today reports that a possible solution to the Phillies current logjam of starting pitchers would be to have Brett Myers serve as a closer. Myers has stated that he’d be open to the possibility if it were deemed best for the team. Fortunately, having possibly your best starter pitch for only one inning per game a few times a week is probably not going to be deemed what’s best. Zolecki points out that it’s pretty unlikely that a 26-year-old just hitting his stride would be sent to the bullpen, which is reassuring.

The only time I want to see Myers walking in from the outfield is in the ninth inning of game 7 of the NLCS, like when Ricky Vaughn came in to face Clue Haywood.
