Quotable: Cliff Lee Just Wants to Win

Jun 14, 2013, 10:33 AM EDT

source: Cliff Lee was fantastic again on Thursday night as the Phillies finally snapped their losing skid in a 3-2 win over the Twins. Following the game, Lee was asked a number of questions about the state of the Phillies and whether he wants to stay here if things don’t turn around and into a real playoff hunt.

The most interesting response came when Lee was asked about staying here even if the Phils aren’t in contention. From Todd Zolecki’s blog:

Does he want to stay if the team doesn’t turn things around?

“I definitely want to win,” he said. “There’s no doubt about that.”

But if it doesn’t turn around?

“I want to win,” he repeated. “I don’t know how else to say it besides that. I want to win.”

Jim Salisbury has more of the Q&A with the Phillies ace.

So it would seem from his comments last night that Lee would be okay with the Phillies dealing him again if they don’t fight their way back into serious contention before the trade deadline.

This may be a good time to remember some sage advice: Don’t trade Cliff Lee ever.

Lee and Hamels are the only two I wouldn’t trade at this point. Everyone else is fair game.

This is kind of like a “what would you take to survive the apocalypse” type of question, so I’ll add Dom Brown because he is our most productive hitter and we need a lefty bat.

Other than that, better to trade everyone and get something, anything, back. I’d rather the Phillies be a terrible baseball team for 2-3 years, let prospects battle it out, and have some hope of returning to prominence, than be a terrible baseball team for 2-3 years with THIS group and have very little recourse after it eventually disbands anyway.

Papelbon is the only other player on the team worth anything

A team that needs a missing piece will absolutely trade something for the likes of Rollins, Utley, and Howard. It won’t be Mike Trout, but hey, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth were another team’s scrap heaps once.

I’d say Hamels, Dom Brown, and Revere are off the table. Revere only because you just traded for him and have to give him at least a couple years here. As much as I’d hate to see Jimmy or Chase in another jersey, it’s the smart move at this point to get some young guys in and start the rebuild.

Nobody “has to get a couple years here” just for the sake of it. If this season doesn’t end well for him I could forsee him being dealt.

Agree that we shouldn’t necessarily give up on Revere after half a season. He makes contact. He just has to stop making 8-year old girl contact. I wouldn’t label him untouchable, though.

Forgot to finish that thought: I wouldn’t label him untouchable if another team was interested in him. Entertain the offer and see what you could get. Amaro always has the last word in that situation anyway.
