Ryan Howard Needs Surgery for Torn Meniscus, Could Miss 6-8 Weeks

Welp. Apparently the MRI results today were not great for Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard.

The Big Piece has a meniscus tear that will require surgery and he’ll need 6-8 weeks to recover from it, according to GM Ruben Amaro Jr. who spoke with reporters before tonight’s game against the Nationals. That would be around the late August to early September time frame.

A long Phillies season gets hit with another major bump in the road.

How many millions this year? Next? The year after?

The Phillies will rush to get Howard back in 4 weeks & then wonder why he’s still hurt. If these guys weren’t already making so much money I’d support their suing the team & its medical staff.

So are any Philadelphia reporters going to question yet another blunder by the Phillies medical staff? What did they call it before? A “meniscus change”? Then they let him play for weeks and weeks, and whaddaya know, it’s a tear that needs surgery.

Do any MLB teams have management as clueless as this one’s? I have to think the other 29 constantly snicker behind their backs. They really appear to have no idea what they’re doing.

Saw this coming from a mile away. At least we get to see if Ruf can play in the bigs or not.

Sounded like Charlie farted during his press conference. Or one of the writers dropped an air biscuit. Need an investigation. It was as we was answering Paul Jolowitz’s question.

Don’t know if I noticed Cholly farting but I did notice Jonathan Papelbon almost defecating all over the bedsheets. A proper analogy would be that at least he didn’t ruin the bed but he assuredly messed his own drawers. You can’t tell me this isn’t about the incessant rumors about his possible trade.

And that 5 year $25M per year deal that RAJ offered Howard 2 years before it went into effect… looks so, so good right about now…

When all is said and done, over the last 2 seasons, he will barely have played a combined full season. And we still have 3 more years and $75M more to pay the guy… Friggen brilliant

It’s getting pretty bad that I see this as a positive for the team. Howard is not the same player he was plain and simple. This gives Ruf a chance to play, Dom Brown a chance to bat clean up, and I think a more balanced line up. I really liked the way the line up was put together last night and hope that this can be a turning point in the season.

The rehab on this injury is paramount. Howard should take his time getting back; heck three years if that’s what it takes.

Remember the days when Phillies fans who hated this contract were called HOWARD HATERS?

No, we just hate the idiot GM. Hopefully Ruf plays well the next 2 months so Sandberg will finally enact a platoon at first next year

  10. Old Players = Injuries - Jul 9, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Anyone surprised? The string of injuries is typical of an OLD team, not an aging team because this team has already aged. The Phils will fall much further before the Front Office gets fired and the rebuild begins in earnest.

BTW – Other than Hallady & Utley, I haven’t noticed many of the Phils showing up at Spring Training in shape and ready to go….another symptom of poor management and a team that really doesn’t care.

Hey..We loved them all 5 years ago. As much as we would like to keep all of them (for oldtimes sake) None of these guys are getting any younger..Dump them all and start over A bandage here, a sprain there, a tear here a bruise there…Pretty soon they are all going to have arthritis if they get any older. Maybe a wheelchair for Howard, crutches for Utley, for Jimmie some bi-focals. They will be lucky to win 60 games this year..SORRY SORRY SORRY
