Brett Myers Optioned to Minors

Jul 1, 2008, 4:25 PM EDT

Wow. From opening day starter to pitching in the minors in just about three short months, Brett Myers has been optioned to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Scott Lauber provides us with the following quote from the Phils:

“We just felt it was the best situation for Brett,” general manager Pat
Gillick said. “This way he can continue being a starting pitcher. How
many starts he will make there is something we’ll monitor.”

I guess that answers that question. Now we discuss whether it was the best/right move and who will be taking his place in the rotation.

Color us a bit surprised. With Myers’ numbers so far this year, the move is certainly justified but we’re talking about a guy who was supposed to be the ace of the staff. Sure, we all knew it would really be Cole Hamels coming in but hoped for great year out of Brett. Credit must be given to Pat Gillick and Charlie for showing the fortitude to send this guy down. If anything it shows they’re not afraid of hurting any player’s feelings. It’s about winning.

The MCall says Myers will start Wednesday night in Allentown against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
