Happening Elsewhere: Saints and Vikings Kick Off NFL Season

Share

So that was a lot more exciting the first time around, huh? The Saints and Vikings played one of the best playoff games in recent memory last year in a high-scoring, hard-hitting, drama-filled NFC Championship Game. None of those descriptors really applied to last night's game, which saw two out-of-sync offenses combine for a mere 23 points--36 less than in January.

Dropped passes, dumb penalties, missed field goals and blocked extra points--just an all-around ugly showing from two teams that should know better. When a game ends by a weird final score like 14-9, and on an anti-climactic third-down conversion at mid-field, you just know that something ain't right. (The Saints won, by the way. Surprise.)

But hey, football's back. That's gotta count for something. Presumably there'll be games better than this to follow, and I for one look forward to watching many of them.
