Just Mayor Michael Nutter in London giving Tony Blair a Philadelphia Union jersey

Nov 6, 2013, 2:32 PM EDT

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has been spending some time in London this week in an attempt to get some British businesses to think of Philly when looking for cities to work in in the future. He also apparently saw some bridges and towers and princes and whatnot, and maybe attempted to drum up some tourism excitement. We’ve got bells and pretzels and places that document the deep history of telling the British to bug off.

He also had this photo op with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in which he presented him with a Philadelphia Union jersey. The folks on the other side of the pond are rather into that soccer / futbol game.

UPDATE: There were many teams represented. Like the Phillies!

Definitely never a bad idea to build the brand outside the US (for both city and club). I’d love to see more in-roads between the U and European clubs if possible. (I realize that’s a bit off topic for a stock picture of two mayors exchanging items, but it came to mind)

Blair is the former British PM not a mayor

A good friend of mine works for the tourism board. He said Nutter has been very generous during this trip. He often gave away free jerseys to various British officials. He had jerseys for each team. Throughout the trip he has been more than generous giving away Jason Babin, Nnamdi Asomugha, Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, Danny Briere and Andrew Bynum jerseys.

Did Mayor Nutter mention the oppresive business taxes in Philly? Union issues? Wage taxes? What a wasted trip … nice vacation for the mayor though, at taxpayer expense.

      “Union issues?”

Yea, I am pretty sure Nutter did mention them. My friend said that Nutter spent a lot of time complaining about how a team that was top 3 in the East in July managed to miss the playoffs. He told him it perplexed him that they played so well in Kansas City, but then came up flat that game against DC United in October. Hackworth is no Wenger, that’s for sure.
